NEW YORK (Reuters) – The World Health Organization on Wednesday confirmed the first case of the Zika virus to have been reported in Colombia.
The WHO said the virus was isolated in a patient in the city of San Pedro Sula, where more than 50,000 people have been infected.
It said the case is not thought to be related to a recent coronavirus outbreak in Brazil, which killed more than 3,000.WHO Director-General Dr. Margaret Chan said in a statement that it is important to emphasize that the virus is not known to cause any health problems and that no deaths have been attributed to the virus.
The United States, Canada and Mexico have already reported more than 2,000 cases of the virus in the Americas.WHO has warned that more than one million people worldwide may become infected by the virus if the virus spreads, particularly in countries such as Brazil.
